Neuromodulators: Soften Expression Lines
Neuromodulators temporarily relax targeted muscles by reducing the nerve signals that cause them to contract. As muscle activity decreases, the skin over those muscles folds less, helping soften the appearance of expression lines.
These treatments are commonly used for frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes.
Neuromodulators do not add volume. If your concern involves volume loss or lip enhancement, your provider may discuss a different treatment approach.
About Botox® Cosmetic
Botox® Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA, a prescription neuromodulator. In 2002, it became the first treatment of its kind to receive FDA approval for cosmetic use in the United States, initially for frown lines.
It is now FDA approved to temporarily improve moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and vertical neck bands called platysma bands in adults. It is currently the only neuromodulator FDA approved for all four of these treatment areas.
Your consultation will determine which areas are appropriate for your treatment. FDA approval for a particular use does not mean every patient is a suitable candidate.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Adults bothered by expression lines may be candidates for neuromodulator treatment. A consultation helps determine whether the lines you want to address are related to muscle movement and whether treatment is appropriate for your health history.
Tell your provider about previous injectable treatments, medications, allergies, muscle or nerve conditions, and any swallowing or breathing problems. Treatment should not be performed in an infected area or in someone with a known allergy to the product.
Discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding, or pregnancy plans before booking treatment. Elective cosmetic injections are generally deferred during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Neuromodulator Frequently Asked Questions
Do anti-wrinkle injections actually work?
Yes. Botulinum toxin treatments can temporarily improve expression lines by reducing the muscle activity that causes them. They generally work best on lines that become more noticeable when you frown, smile, or raise your eyebrows.
Lines visible when your face is at rest may respond less completely. Your provider will explain what treatment can reasonably achieve and whether other approaches may be appropriate.
How long does Botox last?
Results generally last about three to four months, although the duration varies. As the effect gradually wears off, muscle movement and expression lines return.
Your provider will help you plan maintenance based on your response. Botox Cosmetic treatments are generally spaced at least three months apart.
When will I notice results?
Many patients notice changes within several days up to two weeks. Results continue developing after the appointment; an early change is not necessarily the final outcome. Your provider will advise when to assess your response and whether a follow-up is needed.
Will I still be able to make facial expressions?
The goal is to soften targeted lines while maintaining an appearance that suits you. The amount of movement remaining depends on the treatment area, dose, placement, and your individual response.
Discuss your preferences before treatment, including whether you would like to preserve more movement.
How many units will I need?
A unit measures the biological activity of Botox; it is not a syringe or a measurement of liquid volume. Your provider assesses your muscle activity, anatomy, treatment goals, and previous response before recommending a dose.
The FDA-labeled Botox Cosmetic doses for common facial areas are:
• Frown lines between the eyebrows: 20 units.
• Crow’s feet: 24 units total, with 12 units per side.
• Forehead lines: 20 units in the forehead together with 20 units in the frown-line area, for 40 units total.
• Forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet together: 64 units total.
These are labeled treatment doses, not a personalized prescription. Forehead treatment is labeled together with frown-line treatment to reduce the potential for brow drooping. Units cannot be compared directly across different neuromodulator brands.
Does treatment hurt?
You may feel brief pinching or stinging at the injection sites. Comfort varies by person and treatment area. Let your provider know if you are concerned about needles or discomfort.
Is there downtime?
Many patients return to most everyday activities after treatment. Temporary redness, swelling, or bruising can occur, so allow time before an important event. Follow the aftercare instructions provided for your treatment.
What happens if I stop getting Botox?
The muscle-relaxing effect gradually wears off, and movement returns. Further treatment is optional. Botox does not permanently stop the aging process.
What are the possible side effects?
Possible effects include injection-site discomfort, bruising, headache, and temporary eyelid or brow drooping.
Rarely, toxin effects can spread beyond the injection area. Seek immediate medical attention for difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking, or new generalized muscle weakness after treatment.
Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers
Hyaluronic acid fillers are injectable gels used to add volume and enhance selected facial contours. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the body.
Different filler formulations have different properties. Your provider selects a product based on the treatment area, tissue characteristics, and desired outcome.
At Truvé Aesthetics, filler consultations may address lip enhancement, selected lines around the mouth, or structural facial contouring. The appropriate treatment depends on your anatomy and clinical assessment.

Swelling, bruising, and tenderness can occur. Less common complications include infection and nodules. Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel, causing skin injury, blindness, or stroke.
